Common Moorhen

Common Moorhen is a shrouded duck-like
winged animal occupying shallow freshwater bogs.
Its head and neck are dark the back is
tanish and the underparts are a slate dull.
Throughout the rearing season the normal
moorhen could be recognized by its yellow tipped
red bill and a red frontal shield (National
Geographic 1999). Outside of the rearing
flavor the bill and facial shield are tanish
in color. White streaking on its flank
recognizes the moorhen from the comparative
American coot (Fulica History of the U.S).
Common Moorhen breeds from New
England south in the Atlantic seaboard and
Bay of Mexico north to the Great Lakes
(Figure 1). Throughout the winter moorhens happen
in the Atlantic coast from South Carolina
west in the Gulf Coast and south into
Mexico (DeGraaf and Yamasaki 2001).
common moorhens that breed in the northeast
commonly winter in the Gulf Coast
(American Ornithologists Union 1983 as
refered to in Kibbe 1985).
